The artful rooftops of Budapest

Looking around  Budapest you can find many beautiful colourful ceramic tiles made of pyrogranite. It was invented by and made in the famous Zsolnay ceramics factory from the 1880’s.  Fired at high temperature, this durable material remains acid and frost-resistant making it suitable for use as roof tiles, indoor and outdoor decorative ceramics. You can find examples on the roof of Matthias church, the Technical University of Budapest, the National Archives, the Museum of Applied Arts etc.
