MILLENARY BENEDICTINE ABBEY OF PANNONHALMA AND ITS NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

The Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma is one of the most outstanding national historic sites in Hungary,  a religious and art historical centre.

The history of the Abbey – built on the “Holy Mount of the Roman province of Pannonia” (Mons Sacer Pannonia) – is as long as that of Hungary’s history. Both in its architecture and intellectual traditions, the Abbey is a unique example of a one thousand-year-old, active Christian monastery that has evolved through a history of continuous operation. In a wider Central European environment, its community of monks has contributed to the development of culture and the spread of Christianity.

As the Benedictine monks have always striven for peace between the region’s countries and nations, they can be considered early standard bearers of UNESCO’s principles.
