The return of the Cat City

„Macskafogó” aka „Cat City” , the Hungarian animated cult film from 1986, is making its comeback. Not only it has been digitalised in 4K – thanks to the dedicated fans who were so eager and started the movement  – and was re-released 32 years later in September, but recently a special clothes line with T-shirts and hoodies has been dedicated to the famous characters by BP Shop. The film is a must-see, available with English subtitles, though expect a number of puns which is hard to translate from Hungarian to accurately to any other language.

The title roughly means ‘cat catcher’. It has many different themes meshed into it that parody, mainly the James Bond series, Disney (Mickey Mouse), some Warner Bros. references (Planet X), and George Lucas’s Star Wars. The film opens with a Star Wars style text scroll, which tells the main situation:

„In year 80 AM Anno Mickey Mouse, the mice of Planet X are threatened by humiliation and total apocalypse. The well-organized, fully equipped gangs of evil cats are aiming to wipe out the mouse civilization totally, not caring for the old conventions between mice and cats. But in the last moment, when the mouse leaders are beginning to consider leaving the planet, a new hope rises…”

The main plot is about a special spy called Grabowsky (a word play with ‘grab’ or ‘catcher’) who is supposed to stop the robberies in the city and be the protector of the mice race. He is sent to the city of „Pokyo” to get the secret plan of a machine which could save the mouse civilization. Surely, the cats don’t want this to happen, and send some rat gangsters, the Four Gangsters to stop him, who don’t always prove as efficient as their presentation showed.

The sequel, Cat of Satan was made on a limited budget of about 3 million USD in 2007, with the characters drawn and animated by hand, while objects and backgrounds were derived from 3D models and computer simulation. The visual world of the movie is said to be influenced by the first Matrix trilogy movie and Sin City, but softened for a younger audience.
