A night with the Queen of Instruments

Organ concert and instrument presentation in the St. Elizabeth of Arpad Dinasty Parish Church

In the middle of a lush square full of roses, one of Budapest’s most beautiful neo-Gothic churches, the St. Elizabeth of Arpad Dynasty Parish Church stands out like a jewel box with its graceful, laced church towers. Upon entering the church, visitors are amazed by the light pouring in from the stained-glass windows and the harmony of colorful decorative elements.

The stunning building is the only significant ecclesiastical work of Imre Steindl, whose name is also associated with the construction of the Parliament. The church is also referred to as the sacred counterpart of the Parliament; due to the impressive similarity between the exterior and interior decorative elements and patterns of the two buildings. In the gallery of the exceptionally beautiful building, the queen of musical instruments, a high-value, 3-manual, 47-register organ made by Sándor Országh in 1901, takes its place.

During its troubled life, the Rieger organ factory rebuilt the instrument twice, until in 1938 it finally reached its present form. Unfortunately, due to several years of use and other influences, in 1996 condition of the organ deteriorated to a point that, it was condemned to silence. In 2018, they started saving the instrument with a couple of enthusiastic believers, and then with the help of specialists the renovation of the organ could continue.

For the first time in nearly thirty years, she performed again on Holy Thursday in 2020, and her unique tunes could once again fill the space. Since then, work has been ongoing so that the queen of musical instruments can be completed in all its glory.

Witness the rebirth of the queen of musical instruments and enjoy the artistic playing in wonderful evening lights. After the concert get to know our organ, learn about its history, its special sound and uniqueness up close in the gallery.
