Tasting of Pannonian top wines 1.0 in the undercroft of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Bakáts Square

This year, a special cooperation will begin in the context of the development of the St Francis of Assisi parish church of in Bakats Square for cultural and tourist purposes.

The St Francis of Assisi parish church in Bakáts Square, consecrated in 1879, is the work of Miklós Ybl. The neo-Romanesque building is one of the most representative public buildings in Budapest, then the new capital.

After several years of renovation, the building is open to the public again. The church is now open not only to worshippers, but also to those interested in culture: guided groups are increasingly giving the church its rightful place in the tourist offers of Budapest’s churches. The church has become a venue for artistic and cultural events.

Music, contemporary and traditional literature, and their dramatized presentation, demonstrate that the liturgical environment and the language of art are not only complementary but also mutually reinforcing.

The special sacred and cultural role of wine in Christian culture needs no explanation. Thus, a partnership was born in which the host site provides a fitting setting for the culture of wine.

A series of events is now being launched on St Orban’s Day, with the first ever charity event to support the renovation of the church organ. The mechanically-controlled organ, a reminder of the „happy peacetime” of the 19th century, is a precious instrument: like the rest of the church, it is the work of Hungarian craftsmen and its housing bears the mark of Miklós Ybl.

During the wine tasting, presented by the members of the Pannonian Winemakers Guild, we will show you around in this majestic building in several rotations. The tours will discover the Ybl-designed interior, the sacristy- a secluded workplace in everyday life, and we will get close by the Queen of the Instruments, the organ as well.  Here, at the gallery we will learn about its history, uniqueness and specific intonation.
