The Unicum bitter liqueur

The Unicum bitter liqueur

The more than 230-year-old Unicum bitter liqueur has become a very special drink for Hungarians. It was invented in 1790 by the physician of Emperor and Hungarian King Joseph II, Dr. Zwack, one of the ancestors of the Zwack family.

According to the story, one day dr. Zwack made a drink from special herbs and spices, and offered it to the Emperor who was constantly complaining of stomach pain, who then could not praise enough the wonderful product and cried out after the first mouthful: “Das ist ein Unicum!”. This is how he named the drink and Unicum started its journey to conquer the world.

Today, there are 4 types of Unicum, each made only in Budapest, in the old distillery since 1892. The four types of Unicum are: the original Unicum, Unicum Plum, Unicum Riserva and Unicum Barista.

Unicum Plum is a special kind of Unicum, because it is made with dried plums. It is sweeter, smoother drink thank the original Unicum, but it also has the bitter flavor of the Unicum.

Unicum Riserva is our most premium type of Unicum, because it is made with the sweetest wine from the Dobogó winery, Zwack Isabella’s winery. We age this type of Uncium in our oldest and biggest barrel for a long period of time, and then we mature it with the really sweet Tokai Aszú vine in smaller barrels. This drink is a good combination of sweetness and bitterness, an exclusive type of Unicum.

Unicum Barista is our newest kind of Unicum, and it is mad with a 100% Arabica Coffee extract. The drink itself is bitter, like the original Unicum but it has the unique taste of the coffee. The coffee is from Costa Rica, and it has the special flavor of dark chocolate and dried fruits – that is why it is such a great addition to the Unicum.
