With a special program, Memento Park shows how the retro spirit lives on in objects, music, and stories. On Retro Day, brought to life by Memento Park, visitors can browse the treasures of the “KGST market,” take part in contests for kids, explore the world of Trabants and Wartburgs, and get into the spirit of a musical trip down memory lane with vinyl records; then, in the evening, special screenings and presentations will introduce them to the everyday culture of the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s. And at the end of the day, the monumental sculptures reveal their eerie and uplifting faces in the dark, illuminated only by flashlights. This year, Memento Park is hosting Retro Day for the first time—a cultural event that offers a blend of remembrance, experience, and playful nostalgia. On August 30, in the shadows of the sculptures, not only will the somber memories of that era be revealed, but also the objects, sounds, and flavors of everyday life that live on in recent family histories. The day kicks off at 10 a.m. with the “KGST Market,” a retro garage sale on Tanú Square in front of the Sculpture Park, where anyone can get rid of unwanted items or discover treasures, whether it’s an original Bambi bottle or an “Outstanding Worker” award. At 11 a.m., the children take center stage: the “Who Knows More About Grandma’s Childhood?” quiz playfully evokes what it was like to grow up during the socialist era. In the afternoon, vehicles take center stage: at 1:00 p.m., the “Racing in the Footsteps of Merkur” socialist car meet begins, where Trabants, Wartburgs, and Moskvichs chug along among the sculptures. Starting at 2:00 p.m., the musical retrospective “Wish List from Two to Five” awaits guests with vinyl records, where the defining melodies of the era will ring out once again. At 3:00 p.m., those who take part in the special guided tour “Osztapenko Changes Pace” will be treated to a unique experience: behind-the-scenes movie secrets, hidden stories, and the life stories of the sculptures will be revealed. At 5 p.m., the “Fridge-Side Socialism in Budafok” quiz and tasting event will celebrate the legendary products of the 22nd district, which are once again popular at local markets. The evening will be enlivened by cultural highlights: at 6:00 p.m., the screening titled “I Am the Skála Kópé” will showcase the bizarre commercials of the shortage economy, at 7:00 p.m., the lecture “The Sexual Revolution of the Revolution” offers a glimpse into the secret world of eroticism during the Kádár era, and then at 8:00 p.m., the “Lenin’s Lanterns” flashlight walk brings the day to a close, offering an experience that is both frightening and uplifting among the monumental statues. Memento Park’s Retro Day is thus not just about nostalgia: the event offers a blend of entertainment, cultural reflection, and community experience, demonstrating in a playful way how the objects, music, and stories of bygone eras influence our present.
