Healthcare tips for January – Flu season

After Christmas and New Year, flu season reaches its peak activity on time as scheduled, which is the end of January and the beginning of February in Hungary, although, it is expected to appear from October even to April. As being an infectious disease, it is caused by a virus that spreads through the air by droplet infection or direct contamination. Its symptoms appear after a one-to-three-days-long incubation period as chills, fever, muscle pain, lethargy, headache, sore throat, and perhaps dry cough. The treatment for flu usually includes symptomatic therapy, bed rest, plenty of fluid intake, taking antipyretic, then, most often, the body heals itself after a few days’ time. Cross-infections may be indicated by greenish nasal discharge or phlegm accompanied by persistent, high or recurring fever, and in more serious cases, complications such as meningitis, pneumonia, otitis media, myocarditis occur which need targeted therapy and hospitalization. Vaccination, which is created each year on the basis of the specific WHO recommendations, is recommended for people with weaker immune system, people with chronic (lung) disease, the elderly, and people working in social institutions, but is available to anyone not included in the target groups.
