Scents, memories, slowing down – sensory exhibitions at the House of Traditions

The silence of museums is usually a space for contemplation, but the two new exhibitions at the House of Traditions offer much more than that: scents, atmospheres, and that rare „flow” experience in which visitors can truly escape from everyday life. The new temporary exhibitions at the institution, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary, explore our relationship with nature and the body, while also creating a dialogue between the past and the present.

The exhibition Tulips & Sage – Gardens, Eras, Folk Art is a special journey through time: 120 objects tell the story of how the motif of the garden has appeared in Hungarian folk art over the past five hundred years.

The world of monastery herb gardens, the richness of Baroque parks, and the simple beauty of village courtyards are brought to life on textiles, ceramics, and carved furniture.

However, the exhibition is not only impressive in terms of its visuals: the scent of lavender, rosemary, and lemon balm floating in the air brings the past closer, almost physically, evoking the tranquility of gardens and the healing presence of nature. The atmosphere of the exhibition invites visitors to slow down and immerse themselves, adding a new dimension to the museum experience.

The exhibition Szabad szappanozni – A tisztaság kultúrtörténete (Free to Soap – The Cultural History of Cleanliness) explores a completely different, yet similarly personal theme. The exhibition examines the world of hygiene and body care, placing the material heritage of peasant culture in dialogue with contemporary installations.

The works of students at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design sensitively reflect on current issues such as sustainability, overconsumption, and social norms related to the body. What makes this exhibition special is that it can only be visited with a guided tour, making the visit more of a shared reflection than a traditional museum walk.

The exhibitions are open until November 29, 2026, but due to the limited number of guided tours, it is advisable to plan ahead.
