Music will fill the capital for six days across ten venues in Budapest: this year marks the first edition of Budapest Play—the Budapest Street Music Festival and Competition. Launched as an initiative by the Sziget Festival and Budapest Park, the event will showcase the country’s best street musicians, while the public can enjoy the concerts for free in Budapest’s busiest public spaces.

Budapest’s summer cultural offerings are enriched with a new highlight this year: Budapest Play – the Budapest Street Music Festival – is making its debut with the aim of establishing a new tradition, filling the city’s most popular public spaces with music over six days from July 30 to August 8. Organized in cooperation with the Budapest Municipal Government, the event was brought to life by Sziget Festival and Budapest Park with the goal of making street music a defining experience in the capital’s public spaces once again. Following the preliminary selection process, 50–60 performers will have the opportunity to showcase their talent at Budapest’s iconic venues.

What makes this festival unique is that the concerts won’t take place at a single venue; instead, audiences can catch them at various locations throughout the city. The musicians will perform at Deák Square, Batthyány Square, the Fény Street Market, Nagyvárad Square, Fábián Juli Square, the square in front of Allee, the entrance to Margaret Island, Örs vezér Square, Keleti Railway Station, and the Rakpart – Meder area, transforming nearly all of Budapest into an open-air concert venue.

On July 30 and 31, as well as August 1, 6, 7, and 8, street musicians will fill the capital with music.

During the performances, passersby can spontaneously encounter young talents and well-known street musicians who enrich the city’s daily rhythm with a special musical experience. However, Budapest Play is not just a festival but also a competition that offers new opportunities to up-and-coming performers. The organizers were looking for performers eager to play at Budapest’s iconic venues and showcase their talent to a larger audience. Applicants were selected following a preliminary screening, and the deadline for entries was July 17.

The competition’s grand prize is particularly appealing: the best street musician will win the opportunity to perform at the upcoming Sziget Festival, and valuable prizes will also be awarded. The initiative thus not only offers the audience a free musical experience but can also serve as a real springboard for talented performers. A distinctive feature of street music is that it creates a direct connection between performers and the audience. There are no stages, no admission tickets, and no separate viewing areas—just the pulse of the city and shared moments between the musicians and passersby. It is precisely this spontaneity that makes street music festivals one of the most unique cultural experiences of summer in big cities.
