Due to high demand, the Hungarian National Gallery has extended the run of the exhibition *Dolce Vita: The Experience of Italy in Two Centuries of Hungarian Art* through August 30. The exhibition, which has attracted more than 50,000 visitors to date, explores how Italy has become one of the most important sources of inspiration for Hungarian artists over the past two hundred years.

If there is one country that has inspired Hungarian travelers and artists time and again for centuries, it is Italy. The Tuscan hills, the canals of Venice, the ancient monuments of Rome, and the Mediterranean way of life have been reflected in Hungarian painting, graphic art, and photography for generations. This special cultural connection is evoked by the Hungarian National Gallery’s large-scale exhibition titled Dolce Vita: The Experience of Italy in Two Centuries of Hungarian Art, which, due to high public interest, will remain open through August 30.

The exhibition, which has attracted more than 50,000 visitors, showcases approximately 150 works by 75 artists, illustrating the impact that the Italian landscape, architecture, art, and way of life have had on the works of Hungarian artists. The exhibition features paintings, prints, photographs, sculptures, objects, and archaeological artifacts, allowing visitors to trace the evolution of the image of Italy from the 19th century through to contemporary art.

The exhibition is not only a journey through art history but also a kind of cultural journey through time. It shows how a trip to Italy became for Hungarian artists a study tour, a source of inspiration, and often a life-changing experience that later found its way into their works.

The exhibition is complemented by a rich series of accompanying programs. On August 11 and 13, the family-friendly guided tour titled Italian Tales awaits children ages 6–9 and their parents, while on August 19, Dániel Urbán will lead interested visitors through the Italy-inspired works in a tour titled In the Footsteps of Antal Szerb. On August 25, literary scholar Anna Juhász will lead a subjective guided tour where literature and the visual arts converge, while on August 26, curator Adrienn Prágai, and on August 27, art manager Nóra Winkler and art historian Tünde Topor will offer new perspectives on the artistic expression of the Italian way of life.

The Hungarian National Gallery has also extended the run of another successful exhibition. The exhibition titled The Longed-for Masterpiece: The Art of Béla Gruber (1936–1963), which showcases the work of the painter who died tragically young at the age of just 27, will also be on view through August 30. Considered one of the most promising artists of the 1960s, Béla Gruber created more than a thousand works during his short career, with his monumental graduation project, The Painter’s Studio, at the center of his body of work.

Together, the two exhibitions offer a unique summer cultural program in Budapest: one transports visitors into the world of Italian lifestyle and travel, while the other evokes the body of work of one of the most talented—and tragically lost at a young age—artists of modern Hungarian painting.
