The magical world of ruin pubs

It’s been almost 15 years since Szimpla Kert opened at a run-down building in the 7th district. This was when the birth of ruin pubs, which nowadays represent a unique feature of Budapest’s hospitality. After a decade and a half, the enthusiasm of guests is still unwavering: more and more tourists ask for directions to one of the ruin pubs. And let’s be honest, a significant part of young city dwellers also head there for their Friday night parties.

The main hub for the party district in Budapest is Kazinczy utca, teeming with bars, pubs, and restaurants. The emergence of this street is no coincidence, as this was the place where Szimpla Kert, the first ruin pub, opened. Passing through the door, you see a delightful chaos, interior design in flea market furniture, peculiar decorations and a confusion of tongues similar to that of Babel. This is the most talked about place abroad which makes it a must-see attraction for anyone visiting Budapest. The eccentric atmosphere of the place alone makes it worth spending an evening here, but Szimpla also offers delicious food and drinks, as well as concerts.

Address: 1075 Budapest, Kazinczy u. 14.

If you continue walking in the direction of Király utca, you will bump into more and more bars and restaurants. Whichever you choose, you won’t be let down. However, if you want an experience that’s a little bit more authentic, find the hidden Ellátó Kert. One of the great advantages of the pub is that, in addition to the fact that tourists can’t find it easily, part of the garden has a roof and the place is dog-friendly, so you don’t have to leave your pet at home, even if it’s cold outside. The house wine is always excellent, and if you’re hungry, the Mexican kitchen comes to the rescue.

Address: 1075, Budapest, Kazinczy u. 48.

Grandio Bar welcomes guests a bit further out, on Nagydiófa utca. The inner courtyard with trees and bushes provides a unique atmosphere for sipping your beer or wine. The kitchen is also great, so when spring finally arrives, be sure to add this place to your “must visit” list. As the bar is also a hostel, international company is guaranteed, and if you don’t have accommodation yet, look no further.

Address: 1072, Budapest, Nagy Diófa u. 8.

Ruin pubs bring an exciting flavour to the night life in Budapest, so they are well worth a try, even if you are not a big fan of noisy parties. Of course, if this is exactly what you are looking for, then head to Kazinczy utca at once!
