In 2026, to mark the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution and War of Independence, Memento Park in Budapest is preparing a special series of events – Sculpture Park, where the permanent outdoor exhibition uses monuments from the socialist dictatorship to focus on the political propaganda of the era, as well as the historical processes leading up to 1956, the figures and events of the revolution, and their consequences. In this anniversary year, the institution places special emphasis on presenting the historical and visual memory of the era, primarily through educational and professional programs. The Sculpture Park’s open-air exhibition evokes the political and social environment of the era through monuments of the socialist dictatorship. The monumental works—including sculptures representing the tools of propaganda—can be interpreted not only as artistic objects but also as historical sources that contribute to an understanding of the processes leading up to 1956 and the reprisals following the revolution. In connection with the commemorative year, the park is expanding its educational and outreach activities on multiple levels. Expert-led, thematic walks specifically focused on the events of 1956 are available for school groups. The programs cover the events leading up to the revolution, the toppling of the Stalin statue and the symbolism of the site, as well as the visual traces of the political restoration of the era. For those who wish to process what they have seen on their own, a methodological guide has been prepared. The professional outline identifies the works—approximately a quarter of the park’s collection—that are directly or indirectly related to the events, figures, and aftermath of 1956, and provides analytical perspectives to aid on-site reflection. As part of the preparations for the anniversary year, professional training programs for tour guides and educators will also begin in the spring of 2026. The aim of these programs is to support an authentic and engaging presentation of the era, as well as to accommodate the increased visitor interest. The training focuses on interpreting the visual propaganda of the dictatorship and the thematic module titled The Memory of 1956 at Memento Park. The training sessions also cover the park’s concept, which architect Ákos Eleőd built around the theme of “the dictatorship and its fall.” The program includes a presentation of Witness Square, one of the key sites commemorating the events of 1956—including the toppling of the Stalin statue. The goal of these initiatives is to ensure that, during this anniversary year, visitors do not merely view monuments but also understand their historical context, with particular regard to the significance and legacy of the 1956 Revolution.
