The BTM Castle Museum is located in the wing of the former royal palace facing Gellért Hill, in a historic setting.

Visitors can tour the restored rooms of the medieval palace, the former castle chapel and Gothic hall, and see the museum’s unique treasures: the Hungarian-Anjou silk carpet with the coat of arms, the Gothic sculpture of exceptional artistic value, unique in the world, or the marble carvings of King Matthias’ palace.

In addition to the history of the palace, the Castle Museum’s exhibitions also showcase the most important events and personalities in the history of Budapest. How did the Roman provincial centre of Aquincum, and on its ruins the glorious seat of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary, come to be, and how was it destroyed during the wars and sieges of the Ottoman period? How did Pest, Buda and Óbuda unite and Budapest become one of the fastest growing metropolises in Central Europe at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries? How did the Second World War destroy the peacetime metropolis and how was Greater Budapest shaped?

All these questions will be answered in the Castle Museum of the Budapest History Museum.
